Did you know that the Ture Heritage Rhode Island Red is on the Watch List of the Livestock Conservancy?
Beginning in the fall of 2018 our farm decided it was time to help in the conservancy of the of this beautiful American breed.
Since the 1940's the Rhode Island Red has been selectively bred for more efficient egg production as a result they've become a bird that no longer resembles the true Rhode Island Red. They bred them to be lighter in color, smaller body sized and less broody. It is becoming ever more difficult to find the "old-type" that are darker colored, larger bodied, more broody and rare. As the poultry industry has tried to meet industry needs they've single handedly bred the Heritage Rhode Island Red almost completely out of existence.
Rhode Island Reds are the most successful dual purpose bird and backyard chicken. They're a very hardy, sturdy breed and even with limited conditions the hens will still produce eggs.
In 2018 we started working with two different lines of the Heritage Rhode Island Red, two years later now we have some amazing birds.
This is NOT the production type Rhode Island Red. We're working with the single comb HERITAGE variety, they can lay up to 200+ eggs per year. The Heritage Rhode Island Red still have their natural poultry instincts meaning they can go broody and have good mothering abilities. They're larger and darker in color. They're also a non aggressive bird, super melow and calm!
Every year I have several customers ask for Heritage Rhode Island Red. Our hope is to offer you a heritage chicken to meet all your needs whether it be egg production, meat bird or backyard pet. I feel confident you'll fall in love with this mahogany colored poultry that produce lots of big brown eggs.
Mature Roosters are weighing 9lbs, Hens are weighing 6lbs.
The roosters are huge and so far they're proving to be very docile. This is not an agressive bird that the large hatcheries produce. We obtained these lines from some of the top breeders in the US and there are very few around.
The Heritage Rhode Island Red is built like a brick house, notice the cinder block shape of the body :)
Notice. Orders of fewer than 16 chicks total have added fees included in the shipping. This pays for 72 hour heat packs, and the extra weight of those heat packs.
